Forest2Market History

Forest2Market was founded in 2000 by Pete Stewart.

After receving his M.S. in Forest Economics and spending nearly a decade as a forester himself, Stewart understood the challenges those in the industry faced. While the forest products industry's revenue exceeded $65 billion annually, it remained highly fragmented and lacked the critical business information it needed to operate effectively and efficiently. From environmental and logistical snags to inventory problems in a long and cumbersome supply chain, the challenges were signifcant. Adding to the inefficiency were millions of individual timber sellers and a history of antitrust actions.

As an industry insider, Pete recognized the need for a neutral third party — one that neither bought nor sold timber itself — to provide market pricing information to both timberland owners and timber buyers. Forest2Market quickly established itself as the industry-standard by offering market price information that was based on transaction-level detail from actual timber contracts, not surveys or news reports. From there, Forest2Market expanded, adding a delivered price benchmark service in the U.S. South in 2006 and pricing and benchmarking services in the Pacific Northwest in 2008.

Over the years, Forest2Market's staff of forest industry analysts and economists has grown, allowing us to offer a range of customized analytics and resource studies, as well as in-depth explorations of industry trends. Other additions include a macroeconomic outlook, industry outlook and stumpage price forecasts 24 months into the future.

 

Commitment to Growth

As the forest products market changes, Forest2Market continues to expand.

In 2008, Forest2Market began offering products for the wood bioenergy industries — resource studies, data for indexing supply agreements and benchmarking services. In 2009, Forest2Market supplemented its bioenergy offerings with a newsletter.
